Praters: A Lubbock Manufacturer for Tasty Dishes During the Holidays and More!
This holiday season, Lubbock-based Praters, known for its ready-made holiday dishes, is more than a go-to for festive foods—it’s a key contributor to Lubbock’s economic growth. Founded locally, Praters has expanded its reach, with products now available across West Texas, New Mexico and the southwestern part of the United States in retailers like United Supermarkets, Albertsons and Amigos.
A Thanksgiving Tradition turned Successful Lubbock Manufacturer
Praters Foods has deep roots in West Texas, beginning in 1955 when founder Charlie Prater began selling farm-raised turkeys to friends and family throughout the region. Charlie’s operation quickly gained popularity, prompting him to add a variety of side dishes to his offerings. Praters became a go-to for families seeking quality and convenience during the holiday season.
Many Lubbock locals recall growing up with Praters as a holiday mealtime staple.
“I remember piling in the car with my siblings and driving out to Praters every year around Thanksgiving,” said Laurie Meeks, a Lubbock native. “Back then, Praters was way far out and a bit of a drive, so it made things more exciting. When we arrived, we were greeted by dozens of turkeys. I loved leaning on the fence, watching them, and listening to the turkeys’ funny sounds. My brother remembers visiting the shop inside, too, but I don’t recall that part. The best part of the experience was that it signified that the holidays were coming!”
In 2009, United Supermarkets—a Texas staple since 1916—acquired Praters Foods. Known for its dedication to quality, United Supermarkets provided the ideal foundation for Praters’ growth. Under United’s guidance, Praters expanded both its product line and production capability. They are now running over $30 million in sales with 50% of their product being holiday foods and the other 50% being sold year round with foods like easy, ready meals including barbacoa, carne asada, menudo concentrate, charro beans, pozole, smoked and chopped briskets, queso, salas, and many more!
Praters employs 105 Lubbock residents in roles from manufacturing to logistics, providing stable jobs. Their network also extends to regional suppliers, multiplying their economic impact.
Representing Lubbock with Quality and Hospitality
When asked how Praters maintains high quality despite growth and expansions, Justin Sullivan, director of manufacturing for United Supermarkets, said, “We don’t want to change those original recipes. Those recipes haven’t changed at all since they were originally written. The only thing that has changed is the label. Along with a lot of homemade items, it’s put together just like you would in your kitchen—just on a mass scale.”
Praters Lubbock roots run deep and their commitment to the Lubbock community is strong.“It’s not always about selling; it’s about giving back,” Sullivan said. “That’s something I love about working for United. For the past nine years, we’ve partnered with St. Clair Orthodontics and Live Thankfully. They work with local schools to provide holiday meals for families who might not have the means.”
Sullivan said the United team also volunteers with organizations such as Dreams Center, the Salvation Army and First Methodist Church.
“During this time of year, it’s important for us to look at the Lubbock community and ask, ‘Where can we help and do good?’” he said. “Our team members get highly involved and take a lot of pride in putting together and delivering those meals.”
Yummy, Ready Made Dishes from Praters to Buy From United or Market Street
“My grandma always did the cooking growing up and wouldn’t let anyone else in the kitchen, so no one ever learned how to make the holiday meals,” Sullivan said. “So many people like me have realized you can buy a really good quality product, skip spending two days in the kitchen, and instead spend more time with family—while still serving a great meal.”
Sullivan said Praters prepares more than 12,000 full holiday dinners each year, each feeding eight to ten people. His personal favorites from Praters’ holiday lineup are the cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole, and cranberry relish. Of these, the cornbread dressing stands out as the top seller, making it a holiday favorite for families across the region.
