Are you interested in the geography of World War II Glider Operations? Just love maps? Join the Silent Wings Museum for Connecting with Maps!
Saturday September 14 2024 2-4pm
The program begins at 2:00pm with a guided tour of the Silent Wings Museum exhibit, Unfamiliar Territory, highlighting unique maps used by the World War II Glider Pilots as they accomplished their missions behind enemy lines.
Connecting with Maps will then focus on the geography of World War II in comparison with the relative geography of Lubbock, Texas and surrounding areas. On September 14, 2024 we will be concentrating on maps related to Operation Market Garden. In this major operation, 1,899 cargo gliders flown by skilled pilots brought in troops, equipment, and supplies to the heart of the fight for Holland.
Meet a Geographic Information Systems professional to learn about the skills and technology of modern mapmaking, a career choice with many possibilities.
Compare your own familiar territory with the places in which glider operations took place – you may make some surprising discoveries!
While adults and teens enjoy interacting with our Connecting with Maps program, younger children can stop at the Education Space and color a cloth map printed with a period map related to Operation Market Garden. There is something for all ages!
Program and guided tour is included with your admission into the Silent Wings Museum.
