Brewing Success in West Texas
Day break Coffee Roasters Grows from Lubbock to the Region
What started as a small coffee-roasting venture in Lubbock has grown into a regional business serving customers across Texas, New Mexico, and throughout the United States. For more than 30 years, Day Break Coffee Roasters has built its reputation on quality coffee, exceptional service, and a commitment to the community it calls home.
Founder Scott Gloyna discovered specialty coffee while serving in the military and traveling throughout California and the Pacific Northwest during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Inspired by the growing coffee culture he experienced there, Gloyna saw an opportunity to bring something new to West Texas. After returning home to Lubbock, he developed a business plan, partnered with an experienced coffee professional, and launched Daybreak Coffee Roasters.
The company began with a simple vision: create a place where people could gather over a great cup of coffee, much like the conversations Gloyna remembered taking place around the coffee pot in local cotton gin offices. That emphasis on relationships and community continues to define the business today.
Over the years, Day Break has expanded far beyond coffee roasting. While the company still roasts hundreds of thousands of pounds of coffee annually in Lubbock using beans sourced from countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, it has evolved into a full-service beverage and equipment provider. Day Break supplies coffee, beverage products, syrups, smoothie mixes, and equipment to coffee shops, restaurants, churches, offices, hotels, and retailers throughout the region.
One of the company’s most significant areas of growth has been its equipment service division. What began as servicing equipment for its own customers has developed into a specialized operation supporting businesses across a large territory stretching from the Texas Panhandle to Central Texas, from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to Eastern New Mexico. Day Break technicians maintain and repair commercial coffee and espresso equipment for a wide range of customers, including approximately 130 Starbucks locations throughout Texas and surrounding areas. The division has grown from a small local service offering into a critical part of the company’s business and a trusted resource for both regional and national brands. By providing technical expertise, preventative maintenance, and rapid repairs, Day Break helps keep coffee operations running smoothly for businesses across the region.
Day Break’s success is also a story of workforce development and entrepreneurship. As the company has grown, employees have stepped into leadership roles across production, roasting, logistics, technical services, and business operations. The company continues to invest in developing talent and expanding opportunities for its team while adapting to meet the needs of a growing customer base.
Despite its regional reach and nationwide shipping operation, Day Break remains firmly rooted in Lubbock. The company credits much of its success to the support of local businesses, churches, retailers, and institutions that have championed locally owned companies for decades. Lubbock’s central location, strong business community, and culture of supporting entrepreneurs have helped Day Break scale while keeping its operations in West Texas.
Today, Day Break Coffee Roasters serves customers across the Southwest and beyond, proving that a business can start in Lubbock, grow in Lubbock, and make an impact far beyond city limits. More than three decades after its founding, Day Break continues to embody the entrepreneurial spirit that drives economic growth across the region, one cup of coffee at a time.
