Loop 88- Driving Lubbock’s Future Forward
As Lubbock continues to grow, so does the need for a transportation system that supports our expanding neighborhoods, businesses, and industries. The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Loop 88 project is paving the way, literally and figuratively, for a safer, more efficient, and better-connected future for Lubbock and the South Plains region.
A Vision in Motion
Loop 88 is a transformative infrastructure project that will encircle the City of Lubbock, improving regional connectivity and access. The proposed six-lane freeway with ramps and frontage roads will run from U.S. 84 near Shallowater to U.S. 84 near Slaton, creating a complete outer loop around the city. Interchanges at major cross streets will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance accessibility for residents, commuters, and commercial traffic.
By increasing mobility and safety, Loop 88 will ensure Lubbock remains a hub for business, logistics, and innovation in West Texas.
From Planning to Progress
The idea for Loop 88 has been years in the making. TxDOT began exploring the project through a feasibility study to evaluate Lubbock’s future transportation needs and the impact of regional growth. Through three phases, the project has steadily advanced with community input and careful environmental review:
- Phase 1: Completed a feasibility study confirming the need for a new divided highway.
- Phase 2: Determined the preferred route through detailed traffic, societal, and environmental analyses.
- Phase 3 (Current): Involves engineering and environmental studies to finalize the route alignment and prepare for construction.
Public meetings throughout this process have ensured transparency and community involvement, a hallmark of TxDOT’s approach to major projects in Lubbock County.
Supporting Economic Growth in Lubbock
Loop 88 is more than a road, it’s an economic development driver. Improved access to key transportation corridors such as U.S. 84, U.S. 62/82, and U.S. 87 will enhance the efficiency of goods movement, attract new business investment, and open new areas for commercial and industrial growth.
For the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance, Loop 88 represents a major infrastructure investment that supports long-term growth, business recruitment, and quality of life across the region.
Looking Ahead
When complete, Loop 88 will transform how people and products move through the South Plains, reinforcing Lubbock’s position as a thriving hub for industry, agriculture, education, and innovation. As construction phases move forward, this project stands as a testament to progress, keeping Lubbock moving, connected, and ready for the future.
